A total lunar eclipse will make the moon appear red during the across the Western Hemisphere during the "Blood Worm Moon" this week.

The countdown for the year's first (and only) total lunar eclipse begins. The celestial event, which will see the moon change to rusty red hues, will occur in the U.S. on the night of March 13-14.

On the morning of Friday, March 14 -- the day of the full Worm Moon -- the moon will be 12 degrees above the western horizon as twilight begins at 6:23 a.m. EDT. No planets will be visible at that time, NASA said.
