The Alabama cities of Montgomery and Huntsville will honor the 69th anniversary of the bus boycotts on Rosa Parks Day.

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) said it will honor Rosa Parks by placing special interior bus cards inside 400 Ride On Buses throughout December. A designated seat in each bus will also pay tribute to Parks and her historic act of courage.

Rosa Parks Day was Sunday. But the legacy of the civil rights activist will continue to be spotlighted Monday as MATA will commemorate her with live history monologues abroad a Memphis bus.

The City of Tyler said that each Tyler Transit bus will have an honorary reserved seat on Monday for Rosa Parks Day. Parks was arrested on Dec. 1, 1955 after she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery,

The city announced that the memorial is meant to recognize the Dec. 1 anniversary of a milestone in the 1955 Civil Rights movement, when Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. After refusing the bus driver’s order to move, she was arrested for civil disobedience.

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery Alabama, Rosa Parks, was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person, in defiance of Jim Crow segregation laws. This event helped spark the Montgomery bus boycott and the civil rights movement which would revolutionize rights for Black Americans.

Huntsville Transit buses will run with a reserved seat Dec. 2 to mark Rosa Parks Day. The day commemorates Parks’ refusal to give up her seat on one of Montgomery’s segregated buses Dec. 1, 1955, after the section reserved for white riders filled up.

Rosa Parks Day is celebrated every year on December 1 to honor the Alabama native and civil rights icon. This year, Huntsville Transit will offer free bus rides on fixed routes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
