Several downtown Bakersfield city buildings are on lockdown due to an ongoing incident at a nearby private property.
An active hostage situation was ongoing Tuesday afternoon in Bakersfield after a suspected bank robber claimed he had a bomb strapped to his body. Officers evacuated surrounding buildings near the Chase bank branch in the city’s downtown area and shut down streets after the attempted heist.

Former Kern County District Attorney Ed Jagels was taken into custody Monday afternoon on suspicion of driving under the influence. Bakersfield police arrested Jagels at 4:35 p.m. on the 6000 block of Stockdale Highway and escorted him to the county jail.
The Bakersfield Police Department is set to host “Summer Nights with BPD” Wednesday evening at the Greystone Park. The free, family-friendly event is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 3 at the Greystone Park at 5709 Mountain Vista Drive in southwest Bakersfield.
