Riot police clashed with teenagers across France as roughly 400 high schools closed and some 2,000 people were arrested amid escalating student unrest.

While questions have been raised over the role of law enforcement in escalating tensions, the French government decided on Thursday to take a tougher stance. Several cases of teenagers being seriously injured have been reported.
