Less than two weeks after the Supreme Court allowed President Donald Trump to use a controversial 18th century wartime authority to speed deportations, the issue has rocketed back to the justices in a second short-fuse appeal with enormous potential consequences.

The Supreme Court temporarily halted the Trump administration from using the Alien Enemies Act on a group of Venezuelans in north Texas. The high court issued an order early Saturday morning, after the American Civil Liberties Union petitioned the Supreme Court following rejections to halt the action in multiple lower federal courts on Friday.
