JetBlue's announcement comes just one week before the US Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) flight ban on commercial and cargo airlines to Haiti expires on March 12.
The battle for control of Haiti’s volatile capital took another deadly turn on Tuesday as members of a powerful gang coalition that has been using violence to terrorize the population and gain power targeted a densely populated neighborhood in the northeast section of Port-au-Prince.
Dozens of firearms and more than 36,000 cartridges that were being shipped from the US to Haiti were seized by authorities in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday. Handguns, rifles and pistol chargers — as well as one submachine gun — were seized by the Dominican customs office as part of a shipment from Miami destined for the Haitian half of the Caribbean island.
JetBlue Airways is extending its suspension of flights into Haiti’s main international airport in Port-au-Prince. Flights will remain suspended until at least June 11, a spokesman told the Miami Herald.
