LUBBOCK, Texas — A person who contracted measles in West Texas has died, the first fatality in the state from the highly infectious disease, health officials said on Wednesday.

The first death from a measles outbreak that began in late January in West Texas was confirmed Wednesday, Feb. 26. Officials did not release the person’s age. Melissa Whitfield, the spokesperson for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, told the Associated Press that Wednesday's death is the first from the outbreak.
