As customers continue to turn away from using cash, businesses say credit card fees are hampering their margins. On Wednesday, a bill to allow businesses to charge customers paying with cards for those fees moved out of committee with a favorable recommendation from senators.
The measure has support from restaurant owners who say credit card fees are a growing portion of their expenses since 2020.
DETROIT - One of Michigan’s largest utilities will soon start tacking on a fee when customers pay gas and electric bills with credit or debit cards. Beginning March 2, DTE Energy’s residential customers will pay a $2.99 per transaction fee, while commercial customers will be charged $9.99 per card payment.
