Uganda elections: Bobi Wine's home surrounded by military after internet shutdown
Uganda’s opposition leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has had his home surrounded by military forces as the country approaches its January 15 elections. The National Unity Platform (NUP)- Uk Chapter confirmed in a social media post on Wednesday that the opposition leader’s home has been surrounded by the military and that he was not allowed to move out.
Ugandans are set to vote Thursday in an election that is likely to extend the rule of the long-term president while raising concerns about transparency, hereditary rule, military interference and an opposition strategy to prevent vote tampering at polling stations.
Presidential candidate in Uganda, Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has accused the Ugandan military of placing him under house arrest shortly after he cast his ballot in the country’s presidential election, alleging that the move was driven by fear of public backlash following what he described as the theft of the people’s votes.
