Bangladesh plans to review seven electricity supply contracts, including the one with Adani Power Ltd., signed during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule.

A Bangladesh government-appointed committee examining power generation contracts, including one with India’s Adani Power (ADAN.NS), has urged the interim government to hire a global legal firm to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into deals under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s regime.

DHAKA: The national review committee of Bangladesh's power and energy ministry on Sunday recommended a review of major power contracts awarded by the ousted Sheikh Hasina govt, including the one to Adani Group in Jharkhand.

The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, announced on Sunday a comprehensive review of major power agreements signed during the tenure of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On Wednesday, U.S. prosecutors indicted Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and seven others for fraud, alleging a $265 million scheme to bribe Indian officials to secure power-supply deals.

In value terms, India’s power exports to Bangladesh had crossed $1 billion, almost 10 per cent of India’s total exports to its neighbour.

Bangladesh said that external legal expertise is essential for a detailed review, which may lead to the renegotiation or even termination of certain contracts, including Adani Power

In an official statement, Yunus’s office announced that the committee has proposed appointing international legal and investigation agencies to examine agreements made during Hasina’s tenure
