Only 54% of adults said they consume alcohol—the smallest share since Gallup started tracking Americans’ drinking behavior in 1939. And a majority of Americans (about 53%) said they believe that even just “one or two drinks a day” is bad for their health. That’s a leap from the roughly 25% of Americans who held this view from 2001 through 2011.
It's not clear why Republicans are drinking less than Democrats, but President Donald Trump — like President Joe Biden before him — is a teetotaler. He has said that he's avoided alcohol in part due to the struggles of his late brother, Fred.
Health benefits from moderate alcohol consumption are turning out to be overrated. For the first time, most Americans view even moderate alcohol consumption as a health risk. And imbibing has hit a record low, according to a new Gallup poll that says just 54% of U.S. adults in 2025 say they drink.
