Two tropical cyclones were swirling across the ocean southeast of Hawaii after developing on Monday but were not expected to cause any issues for the islands. Hurricane Iona is the first named storm of the hurricane season in the central Pacific and emerged Sunday from a tropical depression to become a Category 1 hurricane in roughly a day.

Hurricane Iona, the first named storm of the Central Pacific season, quickly intensified overnight into a Category 1 hurricane far southeast of the Hawaiian Islands, while a new tropical depression also formed in the basin.

H ONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A new tropical depression has formed in the Central Pacific as Hurricane Iona continues to strengthen southeast of Hawaii. Forecasters said newly-formed Tropical Depression Two-C is now moving westward, following in the track of Iona. Both are forecast to remain well south of the islands and have no effects on Hawaii.
