Federal officers clad in tactical gear deployed smoke, tear gas, flash grenades and other projectiles as the restive crowd of demonstrators hurled water bottles and fireworks.

Two men made court appearances in federal court on Monday accused of assaulting federal officers during a protest outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in South Portland on Saturday,

“Portland has not requested and does not require the intervention of the National Guard,” Wilson said in the statement. He noted that National Guard members and U.S. Marines deployed to Los Angeles under the order of helping ICE and protest management have only inflamed tensions in that city.
