In one of the most iconic “hacks” ever, MIT students spent years planning how to turn the Green Building (Building 54) into a 21-story, color-changing, fully playable game of Tetris. They used 150 color-changing LED lights in the windows, and players control the blocks from a console in front of the building, moving and rotating them in real time. At MIT, a “hack” is a clever, complex, and usually anonymous prank. True hacks are like New England weather — unpredictable — so it usually appears ov

12:15pm- now you can see just how the mountains affect the weather. This snow is coming in at just a few thousand feet or lower, and hitting the mountains and stopping. Big ole red light there only letting a little bit up and over the top. Really a lot of great radar runs today. | New England Weather Guy

Example of the building these bands are doing upon coming over the ocean and then hitting the cold air. You can watch it go from light to dark before your eyes. No predicting where these bands will set up. Already over performing in many areas. | New England Weather Guy

A wide view of the temperature oscillation over the next several weeks. We can see the El Nino location over the Pacific west of southern California and the warm air over the coastal Atlantic. Those pinks and purples to the north are from the cold arctic air as it swirls around dipping down every so often. | New England Weather Guy

Most recent long range modeling is showing Idalia now taking a likely trip northward towards us after hanging around in the tropics for a few more days. Definitely a storm to keep an eye on as this thing could do almost anything at this point. | New England Weather Guy

A general look at how things are expected to playout overnight and into Friday. Again, no real snow accumulation is expected except for the higher elevations above 1,200 feet. That may even drop down to 1,000 feet for a short time before it turns to rain. Thoe much higher elevations will likely still see snow while everyone else is seeing rain. Slick spots are likely in the morning mostly within central New England in areas of southern NH and VT. Some spotty areas may develop within interior MA.

Here is a look at the radar for the next 24 hours using the HRRR short range model. As you can see, this system is going to stick with us for quite some time through tomorrow. It is going to continue to pull in moisture and cold air. This mixture is going to create frozen precipitation overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. I will post the map that I think represents the best additional snowfall through tomorrow morning in the comments. | New England Weather Guy

THURSDAY-FRIDAY UPDATE There's really no easy way for me to explain it without standing in front of a screen and talking to you or showing you, so I will show you what it looks like on the modeling. Snow showers look to move into northern Maine at about 2am Thursday morning, followed by rain showers overspreading the region by 8am. Steadier snow takes over in northern Maine by 11pm Thursday night. All moves out by 3am Friday morning with some random scattered showers likely for a portion of the

Check out that little area of low pressure just to our north just sitting there and spinning. That is what fueled a lot of those showers and storms front yesterday. We will continue to see small passing showers and pop up storms today. The next several days look to have temperatures above normal for this time of year, and beginning Sunday evening, we will see clouds and showers start to roll in with some more persistent rain Monday and Tuesday at least. More to come on that as we get closer, but

Here is a look at what to expect starting Sunday through about Thursday of next week. A moderate system will slide into New England from the west, but coupled with cold air in the north, we are looking at the white stuff up north. Hurricanes down south, snow up north. Welcome to October. We have been following this in the contractor's group for the past week and it has been fairly consistent. There is a decent chance that this will result in needing to treat secondary roads and walkways. NO, it

I need to incorporate this into more of my posts. I am actually in the process of moving to a hybrid video/ traditional post because many times it is just way easier to explain something out loud than it is to write it, but I am so happy I found this retro weather channel inspired forecast system. | New England Weather Guy
