Traditionally a soft-shoe dance form, it is distinctively an American style, with roots tracing back to African slave communication. The most popular sand dancer performing from between the '50's and '60's was Howard 'Sandman' Sims, who regularly performed the art at the Apollo Theater in Harlem.
