The blue duck or whio is one of New Zealand’s ancient endemic waterfowl species and is 1 of only 4 of the world’s 165 waterfowl species that live permanently in rivers. The blue duck is a specialised feeder and relies on fast flowing freshwater/white water. Their diet consists almost exclusively of freshwater invertebrates. Mayfly, stone fly, cased caddis fly and larvae appear most prominent. You can hear on the video our Wildlife Keeper Olly, explaining about the unique soft extensions at the s

Vote whio as the Forest & Bird ‘Bird of the Year’ 🦆 Let's help the blue duck soar to victory! The native whio is one of the rarest birds and is a taonga species in Aotearoa. They have an unusual bill, forward-facing eyes like a human, and appear on our $10 note, but they’ve yet to win the ‘Bird of the Year’ title – let’s change that! We proudly support whio recovery efforts through the Whio Forever programme. Voting closes soon. Vote for whio here: www.birdoftheyear.org.nz #BirdOfTheYear | Gene

It’s Whio Awareness Month – the perfect time to shine a light on these incredible endemic ducks! Rarer than some species of kiwi, whio (blue duck) are nationally vulnerable with a wild population of less than 3,000 individuals. That’s why Auckland Zoo is part of a dedicated breed for release programme with our conservation partners at the Department of Conservation to boost the numbers of this iconic species in the wild. Listen as birds team leader Carl explains this important mahi and gives our

Excuse the shaky footage (we couldn't contain our excitement with this announcement!) A recent survey has show a big increase in whio numbers in Kahurangi National Park over the past 23 years. The current survey, which started in 2020 and is still underway has found a 340% increase in whio/blue duck numbers in Kahurangi, compared to the last survey that we conducted from 1998-2000. Numbers wise, in the current survey we've observed 846 adult whio, with 335 breeding pairs among them, and in the 1
