The blue duck or whio is one of New Zealand’s ancient endemic waterfowl species and is 1 of only 4 of the world’s 165 waterfowl species that live permanently in rivers. The blue duck is a specialised feeder and relies on fast flowing freshwater/white water. Their diet consists almost exclusively of freshwater invertebrates.
