During a left heart catheterization the physician will typically use a pigtail catheter to cross the aortic valve to enter the left ventricle. Many things can be assessed including left ventricular function, left ventricular wall stress (EDP), mitral valve regurgitation, and aortic valve stenosis as the catheter is pulled back across the aortic valve into the aorta.
