For more than 40 years, the nation had passed without experiencing such an act of political violence. As Jackson exited the U.S. Capitol following the funeral of Representative Warren R. Davis of South Carolina, Richard Lawrence stepped from the crowd and fired at point-blank range. The pistol misfired. A secon
