Planning your own "fall migration" for some leaf peeping? Your journey probably won't take you as far as our Bird of the Week! The Swainson's Hawk has the longest migration of any North American raptor. Starting in late August, nearly the entire population of these beautiful buteos migrates in huge flocks called "kettles" from North America south to Argentina and Brazil. On their round trip of more than 12,000 miles, hundreds of thousands can pass by a single site in Mexico in just one day. In t

Happy Wildlife Wednesday! After just a few hops, the Swainson's hawk was out of frame and on its 6000-mile journey to Argentina for the winter. Thanks to everyone who helped the hawk recover at Montana WILD's Wildlife Center! #WildlifeWednesday | Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks

It's Wildlife Wednesday! Corie has teamed up with one of our ambassador hawks to share how awesome Swainson's hawks are. Swainson’s hawks are one of our most impressive migrators, traveling over 6000 miles one way from their breeding grounds here in North America to their wintering grounds in Argentina. Also, there's exciting news! This fall, FWP will release a Swainson’s hawk (not the one in the video) that has been recovering here at a rehab center at Montana WILD. Be on the lookout for videos

It may be winter, but we can’t help but think back to the fall migration. This kettle of Swainson’s Hawks visited Commissary Ridge this past September, totaling 166 individuals! How can we tell these are Swainson’s Hawks? Head to our raptor ID factsheets to learn more: https://hawkwatch.org/learn/factsheets/item/376-swainsons-hawk 🎥: Katelyn West | HawkWatch International

The Swainson’s Hawk that was found in a puddle of fuel and water, while consuming it, is on the mend. The activated charcoal worked wonders on his digestive system and there is little to no fuel residue left on his feathers. He is now in a flight pen. The tough part is that most of the Swainson’s Hawks have already migrated south. We will either have to work with a Rehabber in central or south Texas to release him, or Winter him over once he is fully recovered. #swainsonshawk #migratorybirds | W

Venice is an adult Swainson's hawk who came to us from Prescott with a fracture in her right humerus at the elbow joint. She does not have a normal range of motion and cannot be released. Swainson's hawks migrate to Central and South America during our winter months and return in spring and summer for breeding and raising young. Their round-trip migration is made up of roughly 12,427 miles, making their journey one of the longest performed by any raptor. While traveling south, these birds will o

Both timing and location are critical when releasing a juvenile Swainson’s Hawk (SWHA) from a wildlife rehabilitation center because of their migratory behavior. Swainson’s Hawks are long-distance migrants, traveling from North America to their wintering grounds in Argentina, a journey of up to 7,000 miles. Juvenile SWHAs learn to migrate by instinct, but they also rely on environmental cues and follow large groups of other hawks, called “kettles.” These kettles can include hundreds or even thou

Did you know that hawks like to hide their prey from predators? The Swainson’s Hawk that came in from the fuel station is demonstrating this behavior called Mantling. Side Note: One of our team members wintnessed a Bullsnake get hit on a busy road by two cars. 😬 It did not make it, so we offered it to the Swainson’s Hawk. Red-tail Hawks are notorios for eating snakes but Swainson’s Hawks do sometimes as well. This little lady was happy to have the snake and ate the whole thing. #circleoflife #r

Kojo Baidoo on Instagram: "Hey friends! Today’s birding vlog is a recap of the days I spent hawkwatching this past fall! Watching migrating raptors is admittedly a bit of an acquired taste. Identifying them in flight is a skill that takes a lot of repetition, especially since many birds flying by are mile-high specks with no intention of making things easy for us ground-dwellers. A lot of things have to go right for a good hawkwatching day to happen, and sometimes even when the conditions seem p
